Water Softener Installation by City

Water hardness across the South Bay and Peninsula ranges from under 2 grains per gallon to 26. Efficient Water Heaters Inc. has worked in all 16 of these cities since 1997, so each page below covers the actual water supply, hardness range, housing stock and install details for that city — not a template with the name swapped out.

Hard groundwater cities

Supply comes largely from local wells. Expect hardness well above the 7 grains per gallon threshold and real scale risk to water heaters.

Blended-supply cities

Local wells or treated valley water mixed with soft imported supply. Hardness varies by pressure zone, so testing at the address matters.

Soft-water Peninsula cities

Supplied by the San Francisco Regional Water System — soft city water, but not zero-grain. Homeowners here soften for comfort, spot-free fixtures and tankless warranty protection.

Service Area FAQs

Which cities do you install water softeners in?
San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Milpitas, Saratoga, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Mountain View, Fremont, San Mateo, Redwood City, Menlo Park and Burlingame. Each city has its own page with local hardness details.
Why does water hardness differ so much between these cities?
Because the source differs. Cities pumping Santa Clara Valley or Llagas subbasin groundwater — San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy — are hard, often 11–26 grains per gallon. Peninsula cities buying San Francisco Regional Water System supply are very soft. Cities blending both, like Milpitas and Sunnyvale, land in between and vary by zone.
Will you tell me honestly if my water is already soft?
Yes. We test at your hose bib first and show you the number. In San Mateo, Redwood City, Menlo Park, Burlingame and parts of Mountain View the reading often comes back soft — and even then, many homeowners choose a softener for zero-grain water: softer skin and hair, brighter laundry, spot-free glass and guaranteed tankless warranty protection.
